What did you start your company?

My grandmother opened her own fashion boutique about 40 years ago called Secrets, and my mother and my aunt partnered with my grandmother and the business.  Not to long after my grandmother passed away, my mother and my aunt took over the business, but then my mom and my aunt ended up separating and now they have their own independent businesses. Being raised by my grandmother, my mother, and my aunt, I was raised as a store baby. I always had a connection with going into fashion, and having a store. It just seemed like a natural thing to do.  Fashion has always been a part of my life, it’s what I’m interested in, it’s what I wake up wanting to do. I think about it, read it, just always end up talking about it. It’s just what I am and who I am.

Who inspired you to start your company?

It started with my grandma, my mom, and my aunt. My friends kind of inspired me to take the leap of faith to do it. You know the people that get best dressed in high school and college that was always small to me. I got voted that and I was like okay cool. People always looked at me or looked to me as the girl that slays. I’m smart, I’m nice but I have always been known for my look. So I think in terms of my friends with our little girls talks and pep talks that inspired me to take the leap of faith to do it full time.

What is the purpose of your company?

The purpose of my company is to provide exclusive accessories for the everyday women, so that is like the main message of the company. We focus on a few pieces of clothing, but it is based of off accessories. So it’s called Get It Grl because it’s like every girl, every style, everyday fashion, and it’s like a motivational pitch. So we have like pep talk conversations in the store, we talk about life, we talk about your look, we talk about your self-confidence, and overall we want you to feel like “Get It Grl” when you leave the store.

In the process of building your company, what was one of the biggest obstacles you faced and how did you overcome it?

So, we’re in little Five Points. So being in Atlanta for one and then being in little Five Points its already a bit of competition with other boutiques. Not in the sense as if you’re better than the store, but in general you’re entering the fashion world so it’s like there are already fashion stores and fashion boutiques. So, you just have to figure out what your main message is and what you have to offer that is different or unique. The obstacle was mainly figuring out our clients. Otherwise, it is like a bittersweet thing because my mother is my partner. We have a great relationship, we’re best friends. But we had to find a balance because sometimes you want to go off on my mom, or she wants to go off on me, but you can’t do that because we’re partners.

Where do you see Get it Grl going in 5 years?

I see Get It Grl in the next five years being based in Atlanta but having stores in different parts of Atlanta, in New York, in California, in Texas, and different major cities. I see us expanding to different parts of the country. I see us having Get it Grl more of a lifestyle, not just that you can dress up and you can look nice, or you can complete the outfit with accessories or make the outfit for the occasion, but that you feel good, that you can take care of yourself, and you taking care of your self is included in how you look. Overall, I just want Get It Grl to be more of a lifestyle brand and an accessory and clothing brand, but overall I just want the message to be that every girl can “get it”, you can get your money, you can get your career, you can get your man, you can get whatever.

What advice would you give young entrepreneurs who want to pursue their own brand?

My advice would be to start with you, and to figure what your interest is. What makes you want to wake up and get it every day? What do you want to provide? What are you going to do make a difference in someone’s life? Starting with those questions is the first, but the next thing would be to diligent, consistent, and persistent. You have to work so hard for yourself, because no one is going to work harder for you, your brand, and your business than you are.
