This Pink Week, HerCampus (HC) GSU is taking a poetic venture to ancient Greece, mostly Zoom-esque. Nevertheless, the first night’s event on Oct. 26 characterized by Athena, the goddess of poetry, wisdom, art, and war strategy, was an open mic night bountiful of idyllic poems from many.
The evening was catered by snapping accompanying each poem and girl power with full support behind every piece shared.
Jada Young, the Events Coordinator of HC GSU, started first with “Through the Looking Glass”, an original piece. She told a story of how “time heals all wounds” and growth. Following was the story of “recognizing the God in a[ll] wom[e]n” in Reyna Biddy’s “Self Love” read by Moya Leung, President of HC GSU.
Sharmaine François, Events Director, then shared a poem by Melissa Studdard titled “Respect” and Chasity Drake, Social Media Chair, like Young, spoke an original piece “Date Night With Me”. Drake, identifying herself as an “emotional poet”, plans on publishing a poetry book in the future about similar themes. Both Drake and François’s pieces held axioms of self-love and respect.
Jhazzmyn Joiner, Georgia Tech Alumni, also told an original poem about a relationship and a “Paradigm of love” and Samantha McGlothin, staff writer, shared a piece by Oria Mountain Dreamer named “The Invitation” about staying true to oneself.
The night ended with heartfelt laughter, discussions about favorite poems and poets, and a talk about what poetry means to everyone. Overall, the open mic night was a success and was surely filled with wisdom, art, and rhythmic stories that moved all who attended.
