Oscars 2013 Fashion: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GWU chapter.

This past Sunday marked the 85th annual most glamorous night in Hollywood, the Academy Awards. My favorite part of this night, along with many other college girls, is the fashion. From the red carpet, to the presenters, and performances, this night allows the stars to truly shine… or burn out. It seemed that the dress theme of the night was standing out, whether that be in glitter, bright colors, or stark pales/white. Her Campus has compiled a full fashion recap of the night, including the good, the bad and the ugly.

Halle Berry was a gem in a stunning, glittering Versace gown, this beautiful Bond gal does not age! Sandra Bullock also followed the glittery trend in her lace Elie Saab with a sheer bottom that revealed just the right amount of leg. Jen Aniston looked like someone we all wish was our best “Friend” in a perfect red strapless Valentino with a huge but elegant poufy skirt. As always, her hair and face looked glamorous as well. Jennifer Lawrence not only won Best Actress, but also took home many best-dressed nods in her Dior look. The pale pink worked well with her effortless updo and chic Chopard diamonds. Not to mention her effortless job at walking-off her fall as she went up to accept her Best Actress award. Charlize Theron looked absolutely brilliant in a minimalistic white Dior gown with a jeweled peplum waist to match her Harry Winston sparkles. She even rocked the chopped pixie cut and natural makeup that only further accentuated her beauty. Everyone’s favorite Dreamgirl Jennifer Hudson killed it in a long-sleeve Cavalli that hugged her in all the right places and totally showed off her amazing bod. Her performance of “And I Am Telling You” earned her a standing ovation. However, while her dress was great on top, it really did nothing for her body from the waist down.

Some more of my top picks include Olivia Munn who rocked a red and gold Marchesa with intricate detailing fit for a queen. Amy Adams really caught my eye in a light grey Oscar de la Renta princess gown with a bustier top that exploded into a huge skirt and Reese Witherspoon in a beautiful bright blue Louis Vuitton gown that she said her daughter helped her pick!

Amongst the beauties, there were, as always, some stars that did not shine so bright. In my opinion, Anne Hathaway was a real miss. Every time she came onscreen it was hard not notice the unfortunate darts on her chest in her pale pink Prada gown. Another unfortunate look was Kristen Stewart. From her awfully messy hair to the unexplained crutches/limp to the pale Naeem Khan dress that washed her out completely, I honestly couldn’t look away fast enough.

Nothing is sexier than a man in a great tux. The guys really rocked it last night and complemented perfectly the ladies by their side. Jamie Foxx, with his gorgeous 19-year-old daughter Corinne on his arm, both looked dazzling. Foxx was wearing a grey Calvin Klein number and Corinne in an intricate teal strapless gown. Bradley Cooper looked dapper, and even better, with his precious mom Gloria by his side! Channing Tatum was another stunner (even though we all not-so-secretly wish he was still in his “Magic Mike” costume) and congratulations are in order for the soon to be dad who proudly kept his hand on pregnant wife Jenna Dewan’s belly! Mr. President and Best Actor, aka Daniel Day Lewis stood out in a sharp navy Domenico Vacca tux. Eddie Redmayne was another stunner of the night who looked too hot for words in his effortlessly traditional black McQueen tux paired with velvet skull slippers that brought just the right edge.

Last but not least, a shoutout to the precious nine-year-old (youngest ever) Best Actress nominee Quvenzhané Wallis. Although she didn’t take home a golden statue, she looked too cute and age appropriate in a navy Armani Junior dress and an adorable puppy purse on her arm.
