Gone are the leisurely summer days where short shorts and a floral bustier constituted an acceptable outdoor outfit. Now, with autumn settling in, it’s time to reevaluate our wardrobes to accommodate the lower temperatures. Her Campus GWU asked two student style gurus for the inside scoop on transitioning seamlessly and stylishly to boots and sweater season.
Sophomore Ali Stagnitta, a journalism major who has interned at college style website CollegeFashionista.com, says fall fashion is her “absolute favorite!” Here are a few of Stagnitta’s favorite and current fall fashion trends:
Layers, layers, layers! You can layer leggings, knee high socks that peek out of boots, and a long sweater with a scarf and a fur vest…the list goes on!
“I love wearing clothes—it’s my favorite thing to do—so when I get to wear so many at the time I get really excited and really happy,” Stagnitta says.
Mixing textures is in this fall, especially velvet and leather (lucky for us, both velvet and leather are soft and warm!). But it’s not just leather in jackets and peplum tops anymore—stripes of leather have been creeping into leggings and appearing full on in leather pants. Velvet, also, has been popping up everywhere—especially in leggings and coats. Fall is the time to play with textures!
Most importantly, Stagnitta reminds us “you can still look cute while staying warm. Even if you want to just roll out of bed and put on sweats, it’s easy to be chic and comfy.”
Another GW fashion expert, sophomore Sydney Sadick, runs her own fashion blog and has previously interned for celebrity stylist Rachel Zoë. According to Sadick, fall fashion is all about balance—especially when the weather can be hot one day and freezing cold the next:
“Combining one of your summer floral tops, which is still a huge pattern for fall, with dark jeans and a boyfriend blazer and booties allows you to look fall-appropriate while still giving your summer wardrobe a couple more rounds of wear before they go in hibernation mode,” Sadick says.
Melding your summer and fall wardrobe can be an easy way to transition into fall, but if you’re looking to purchase a few staple pieces, here are a few of Sadick’s suggestions:
Black leather booties
Crystal statement necklace
Metallic clutch
Leather jacket
Deep purple skinny jeans
And as far as makeup goes? Try “sticking to light effortless eyes with a bold, vampy lip-you’ll look refreshingly on trend.”
