Campus Celeb: NEDAW
Once a year in February, Hamilton comes together to recognize National Eating Disorder Awareness week. We spoke with Soozy Adelman, a NEDAW Peer Advocate to hear what the movement is all about.
What is the main message you are trying to get across to the students of Hamilton?
Eating disorders are serious illnesses that have, for too long now, been stigmatized and thus not discussed. The week is intended to raise awareness about these issues, encourage discussion, and provide students with the resources they need to get help.
What events did you hold for the student body?
Monday – Speak Out
Tuesday – Visual Display Board
Wednesday – America the Beautiful II Film Screening
Thursday – How to Help Your Friends: A forum
You guys are the ones behind the chocolate kisses on the dorm room doors, what inspired that wonderful idea?
We wanted to provide a fun and delicious way to welcome people to the week as well as encourage them to take that day to worry a little less about their weight.
Do you consider this week to be a success?
I consider it to be a success even if we only help one person. So, I definitely think it has been a success since we have reached so many students.
