On Sunday, September 21, 2014, Hamilton students filed on to a bus to
drive to New York City to participate in the People’s Climate March. Over 300,000
people from 162 countries showed up with posters in hand to rally for action on
climate change. The reason for coming together for the march was to grab the
attention of world leaders, who met this past Tuesday for the preliminary United
Nations summit, which is one of a series of meetings held to reach a new agreement
regarding the climate by 2015. At this summit, each country stated their goals
for climate change and the march was held to show that people do care about the
environment and want to encourage change.
While various students went for individual reasons, Hamilton’s main goal
was to experience all the energy and contribute to the overall goal of making a
statement. Elise LePage’s 18’ explained her interest for going on the march as, “ I
had never been to a march before, so I just wanted to experience it and see what
it was like, and to see the different perspectives, all the different groups and what
goals they had for the future. Also, sometimes here, you don’t feel like you see that
many people who care, but at the march everyone who was there cared about the
environment otherwise they would not have been there.”
Many of the students who participated in the march came back to Hamilton
with a renewed sense of enthusiasm for helping the environment.
