This week’s athlete of the week is Lysander A. Bracey. Lysander is a third- year business management major from Charlotte, North Carolina. Lysander goes by Ly or “Young Swaggy” by his friends, team mates, and family. Bracey transferred from Brunswick Community College where he also played collegiate basketball. He averaged 18.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game his freshman year. And ending last season third in the MEAC conference, as a starting guard.
Not only is Bracey known on the court but also known in the Hampton Roads community. For the past two summers Ly helps out at their Edward Joyner basketball camp. Along with his teammates and working with kids from ages 5-16 from the Hampton Roads area in teaching discipline, basketball, competition, and of course fun! Lysander is excited about this upcoming season, keep reading about this Pirate of the week!
HC: Why did you choose to play basketball?
LB: When I was 7 months old, my dad taped a little basketball to my hands. Then picked me up and made me think I was dunking the ball.
HC: How long have you been playing basketball?
LB: Since I was 5 years old.
HC: Has basketball been an outlet for you to get girls?
LB: Yes, especially in high school
HC: What do you look for in a girl?
LB: Runs track, 5’4, sister locs, green eyes, beautiful smile, good sense of humor, drop-dead gorgeous, and has to be a Journalism major! Oh! Has to stay in McGrew Towers!….. my gf .
HC: Who inspired you to play?
LB: My dad at a very young age. I would go to practices with my dad while he coached his team and after shoot with him for another hour.
HC: What motivates you to keep going?
LB: Personally, I just have an inner drive and want to outwork the next guy.
HC: What is your hype song, before a game?
LB: F**CK, maaaaan, *Laughs* “Sauce It Up” –lil Uzi
HC: How do you get rid of nerves before playing?
LB: Prayer, I text my girlfriend and my mom too.
HC: Why’d you pick to play at Hampton?
LB: The real reason or the “politics” answer? Honestly, I heard Hampton was known for the beautiful woman and also because I had previous high school teammates go here.
HC: Would you ever cut your hair?
LB: *laughs* if I had the choice no I wouldn’t but for the “real” world yes, I kinda have too.
HC: Who did you get your height from?
LB: I got it from my dad’s side, they’re all tall. The shortest is 6’1 and I’m 6’4.
HC: What is your favorite thing to do before a game?
LB: I like to listen to music, eat a fresh pack of skittles or watermelon sour patch kids and read my girlfriend’s good luck text☺
