Brazilian Waxes: What You Need to Know

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

Brazilian waxes have become popular since the 1980s, and for a lot of women is the preferred method of hair removal. By definition, a brazilian wax removes the hair from your pubic area, along the vagina lines, and in your behind. Even as we go into the fall and winter months, you still may want to keep your pubic area upkept for personal self-care. As opposed to shaving, waxing provides great benefits for the bikini area such as lasting longer, being less prone to ingrown hairs, and providing a smoother feel. Now I can’t lie to you – it hurts, especially on your first time. However, after getting into a routine of going, you might find that brazilian waxes are better for you. Here is a little guide on some of the types, and how to prepare for your appointment.

Hard Wax

Hard wax, or the traditional method of waxing, applies warm body wax to the skin. It cools, hardens, and then is pulled off. According to Vogue, “A benefit of hard types of wax is that they only bind to the hair, never the skin.”

Sugaring

Sugaring has become a preferred wax method for a lot of people because of its appeal to people with sensitive skin. It is said to be gentler and smoother for some people. The wax is made from sugar, lemon, and hot water.

Cocoa Wax

Cocoa, or chocolate waxing, is similar to sugaring. Chocolate “is antioxidant-rich and less painful to use as opposed to other body wax variants. Chocolate body wax also contains glycerine and oils like soybean and almond, and is anti-inflammatory, which makes it the ideal choice for skin that is prone to redness,” says Vogue.

Before your appointment, take some ibuprofen or Advil to help ease the pain. You want to make sure that your hair is at least ¼ in long before as well. If it’s too short, the wax will have a hard time grabbing on and if it is too long, it will elongate the process and both essentially make it more painful. After your appointment, make sure to exfoliate at least every other day to help prevent ingrown hairs. I like to use Dove’s exfoliating body polish, which comes in multiple scents and will provide a smooth feel after your wax.

I hope this information helped and you’ll be prepped and ready for your next wax appointment!
