Brittany Atkins: Following the Family Rules

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

Hampton University is filled with a diverse student body. People come from all over the world to attend this prestigious School. Hampton is made up of students from out of the Country and ones who live down the street. Some of the students happen to be children of celebrities. One Hamptonian is the daughter of the award winning, famous rapper, Ja Rule. His daughter Brittney Atkins is a Junior, Strategic Communications major from Bergen County, New Jersey. Ja Rule’s new family show was very anticipated by his millions of fans and premiered Monday October 26th, at 10:00 pm on MTV.

HC: What was your first thought when you found out your family was going to have a TV show?

BA: When I first heard I was going to be on TV I thought it would be a great experience knowing what I want to do later in life. I have been on TV before, but that aspect was really exciting as I was able to be around a production team.

HC: Was it weird having the cameras follow you around?

BA: At first the cameras are a little weird because there are literally like five men with cameras following you or just standing there, but after about a month you get used to them being there and you kind of forget because they become like family. It’s a nice feeling.

HC: Do you feel like the show invades your privacy?

BA: I don’t feel like the show invades my privacy really more then I already had. I’ve always been a private person being who my father is, so I wasn’t worried about the extra exposure because it’s all positive.

HC: Why did you agree to be a part of the show?

BA: I agreed to do it because one, it was with my family, which is amazing. And two, because opportunities come and go and when they are given you should take them because time waits for absolutely no one.

HC: Are you afraid of how people will view you after watching the show?

BA: I’ve ultimately come to not care what others think because I have become confident enough in myself to know who I am regardless of what anyone says about me. I’ve always felt that as long as you know all of your flaws and qualities there is nothing anyone came say to break you.

HC: What keeps you so humble?

BA: I honestly was raised to be humble. With my dad being who he is, I’ve watched him work very hard to be where he is today and never treat a single person like he’s better then them. My parents’ one rule is to treat people how you would want to be treated. So being humble is just who I am. I have nothing to prove to anyone because I know what I have and what others do not.

HC: What do you want people to know about you after watching the show?

BA: I want people to know that me and my family have truly opened up our home for the world to enjoy. Despite what people may think, this is who we really are and we wouldn’t change it for the world. It’s what makes us so clos. We are accepting of each other and love everyone for who they are.

You can catch the show every Monday at 10:00 pm on MTV.
