Chick-Fil-A Donates Millions to Anti-LGBTQ Organizations

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

Twitter has had a field day with the revelation that Chick-Fil-A donated over $1.8 million to anti-LGBTQ groups in 2017, according to Vox. The notorious Christian organization has had a history of anti-gay comments and donations to organizations sharing their beliefs. However, many of the popular memes discuss how people are still willing to eat Chick-Fil-A despite these circumstances.

Having a Chick-Fil-A on campus makes it hard to boycott, as for many students this is a central food location. But really, who doesn’t love Chik-fil-A?! I spoke to a few students on campus to see how they felt about the recent information and if this impacted their decision to eat there.

“As a Christian organization, you shouldn’t discriminate against them [LGBTQ]. That’s bad for your business,” said sophomore Olivia Mudd. “As a student in this society, I’m not surprised students aren’t worried about it because Chick-Fil-A is on hundreds of campuses and there are not many options to choose from.”

Another student had a same stance. “It hurts me to know that Chick-Fil-A would participate in these matters,” said sophomore political science major Ahmaad Edmund. “As a Christian I understand that same-sex relationships contradict scripture and traditional doctrine… what the obligation should be of Chick-Fil-A is to break ties with those organizations and treat people like Christ would.”

Majority of the students I interviewed to agreed that although the information was terrible, they would probably still continue to eat at Chick-Fil-A. It’s hard to blame them; Chick-Fil-A has become a central food organization in Southern U.S. However, change has to start somewhere. I’m not saying you should stop eating the food you love, but before you spend your money take a minute to think about the people who are being indirectly affected.
