This week’s Finest Freshman is Jarrett Powell, also known as JP! He is a student athlete from Woodbridge, Virginia who enjoys training, making beats, and collecting shoes. You might have seen him last week at the Que/ Delta auction when he paid for a date with Miss Hampton for $150. Curious to know why? Read more below to find out!
HC: What made you choose to attend Hampton University?
JP: Well besides football, the overall feel from when I first stepped on campus felt like a home to me; it truly feels like my home by the sea. I also have a older brother that went here, so that really solidified that.
HC: How long have you been playing football?
JP: I’ve been playing football since I was in the 6th grade.
HC: What’s your strengths and weaknesses?
JP: My strengths really are meeting new people and making friends. I’m very outgoing. My weakness is finding out who I can and cannot trust.
HC: When you’re not on the field, what do you do in your spare time?
JP: I like making beats and producing music. My favorite DJ is DJ Envy, and I really look up to J Cole because of the message he puts through his music and how creative his beats are.
HC: What motivated you to pay $150 to go on a date with this year’s Miss Hampton University, Brooklyne Baker?
JP: I didn’t plan on spending $150 to go on a date with Brooklyne, it just happened in the heat of the moment. Also, the money went to a good cause so that motivated me as well.
HC: Who inspires you to be great?
JP: My parents definitely inspire me to be great. They really motivate me to be the best person I can be. I see them do great things every single day.
HC: If you could give any advice to your younger self, what would it be?
JP: If I’d give advice to my younger self, it would be to slow down and stop rushing; just learn how to live in the moment more.
HC: What’s your favorite thing about Hampton?
JP: My favorite thing about Hampton is really the overall cultural experience and the experience of just going to a black school, which is different for me because I went to predominantly white schools.
HC: What do you look for in a woman?
JP: I look for somebody that I can hold a conversation with, has a personality, and just enjoys life to the fullest.
HC: Have you found anyone on campus that catches your eye?
JP: Oh, of course, every day.
HC: Where can we expect to see you in the future?
JP: Hopefully somewhere on tv, and in the community making a difference however I can.
