“Families are like branches on a tree. We grow in different directions yet our directions yet our roots remain as one.” -Anonymous. Family is one of the most influential impacts in your life. They help to mold you into the person you are today. As young adults, especially in college, it is imperative that we know who we are and our family background.
Taking the time to ask questions and research your heritage allows you to get a better understanding of who you are, and the path your ancestors took to get you here.
Here are just a few benefits of knowing your family history
Creating a Personal Connection
As humans we constantly crave attachment and the need to be loved and desired. When forming relationships, your family plays a significant part in the amount of relationships you maintain. This begins to be passed down from generation to generation. Those bonds help to connect us with our past and see the path our ancestors took to get us to where we are now.
Having Compassion
When learning our family history we start to build an appreciation for those who came before us. Seeing their struggles and sacrifices, brings a sense of humbleness to our hearts. As african americans our roots are deeply wounded, and it is essential that we know our history. From slavery to simply being denied the right to enter certain areas. Details that may seem so minute, truly play a factor in our background. Having this compassion also helps to grow relationships amongst your family members . (i.e. parents, siblings, cousins etc..)
Staying Educated
In my opinion this is the most important reasons you should know your family history; being aware of health conditions, mental illness and family traditions is what makes each individual family unique. This benefits you especially, because you’re aware of any on-going illnesses or traditions that may have been passed down from generation to generation. You may also notice ongoing patterns that can be prevalent on either side. The more you learn, engage you will be with your heritage and customs.
Builds your Self-Esteem
Lastly, taking the time to learn your history helps to improve your self-esteem. The values and stories that your family may have help to grow in personality and character. Knowing your history is more than just seeing how many aunts and uncles you have, it’s about molding us into the people we are today.
So, the next time you are at a family gathering, take a moment to ask the elders in your family about your history and ancestors. You never know you might learn something so life changing, that inspires you to look even deeper into WHO YOU ARE.
