Long Distance Relationships

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

Long distance relationships CAN work. Forget what your mom, dad, best friend, long lost cousin says! If you want to be with that person BE WITH THEM.  It will take a lot of work but here are a few tips that will help keep your long distance relationship flourishing.

Establish Trust

That’s a given for ALL types of relationships, but with a few extra miles in the way, it is important that you have trust in your boo and your boo has trust in you. No relationship will be solid if there is no trust. Plus It’ll be a pretty long trip to pull up on them whenever you have a suspicion.

Communicate

COMMUNICATION IS KEY! Not only texting and regular phone/Facetime calls but communicating your feelings. If you don’t like that your significant other is out at 2 am and he didn’t call you at 1:15 like he said, TELL HIM SIS!

And GUYS, tell us how you feel! We aren’t mind readers, don’t assume we know, we like reassurance let us know wassup.

Talk Enough BUT Not TOO Much

FaceTime, texting, and Snapchat WILL become your best friend but it is easy for us to get carried away and expect to be on the phone with our boo 24/7. Give them a chance to miss you

Keep it SPICY

When I say spicy I don’t necessarily mean nasty, I mean that’s important too, but switch it up! Keep the relationship spontaneous. It is easy to fall into a routine so share funny tweets and Instagram post with them, send gifs, send random presents, dance and sing on facetime to them, do whatever you have to do so you too don’t get bored

Plan Trips

There is nothing like that feeling of finally seeing you man’s, or woman’s, after missing them for weeks. Compare schedules AND bank accounts to plan trips together!

Keep the Big Picture in Mind

There are going to be times where you question why you’re doing this, just remember the bigger picture and why you are willing to go through this with them. Make sure you guys are working together towards the same goal of future that includes one another.

It’s only going to work if both of you have that same understanding.
