Pirates Abroad: Leana Camille

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

Junior, Political Science Major, Leana Camille had the summer of her dreams. The New York native  had the opportunity to study abroad in Greece.  We were able to sit down with the international student and chat about her global experience.

HC: Where did you study abroad?

Leana: Thessaloniki, Greece

HC: Why did you want to study abroad?

Leana: I wanted to gain experience on an international level that may aid in my ultimate career goal. I want to be an intelligence collection analyst for the central intelligence agency.

HC: How would you describe your overall experience?

Leana: It was definitely a learning experience. I had to adapt to the culture.  I had to learn how to get around in the city, how to interact with the people that lived there and also learn their style of learning.

HC: What did you study?

Leana: Philosophy and Globalization.

HC: What were your living arrangements like?

Leana: I stayed in an apartment through the school with a girl from my study abroad group.

HC: What would you tell other students who want to study abroad?

Leana: Definitely get scholarships! It’s very expensive. Even though stuff there is cheaper, you spend more when you think stuff is cheaper. Try to save a lot so you can spend at your leisure and don’t have to worry about not having enough money. Definitely budget the money that you do have.

HC: How did you choose where you wanted to go?

Leana:  There weren’t many locations with my major so I had to find one that had mine. I wanted to get a feel for a European country and a European way of life so that’s how I decided on Greece.

HC: What was your favorite experience?

Leana: Going on the different excursions that my program provided. They were educational as well as fun. We got to look at different historical sites that had other influences on places in the world.

HC: If you could study abroad again, where would you go?

Leana: I would do it again. I want to go to Thailand.  It will probably be a backpacking trip after I graduate.

HC: What was the food like?

Leana: The food there was actually great! I could tell the difference from how their food was processed and how food is processed here.
