The state of our country at the moment has many Americans in turmoil and confusion. From immigration incidents to the government shutdown, citizens are becoming genuinely concerned about what is in store for our beloved nation.
A little late for that some may say, but there still may be hope. The future of our country will be in the hands of the next president (God forbid another Donald Trump), and candidates are already coming out the woodwork. Here is a quick look at some of your options for the 2020 presidential election:
Â
Julian Castro- Democrat
Running for the Democratic Party, Castro is the current mayor of San Antonio, TX. He is more popularly known as the former secretary of housing and urban development under the Obama Administration. He is  in favor of same-sex marriage, immigration, and tuition-free public colleges (hellooo!!).
Â
Andrew Yang- Democrat
You may be thinking, “I’ve never heard of this man a day in my life,” because, same. That’s because Andrew Yang isn’t a politician; he’s an entrepreneur and author, who’s organization, “Venture for America” helps entrepreneurs create jobs in select cities. Another thing separating Yang from the pack is his proposal to give $1,000 a month to every adult in America, and who can say no to free money?
Â
Tulsi Gabbard- Democrat
Yet another Democratic candidate is Tulsi Gabbard. You may have heard of her being bashed for her anti-gay history, working for an anti-gay advocacy group and other statements. With our generation and the strides made for the LGBTQ community, she may not stand a chance. Despite this, Gabbard is an advocate for climate change, criminal justice reform, universal healthcare, and much more. https://www.votetulsi.com/vision
Â
Kirsten Gillibrand- Democrat
A New York Senator since 2009, filling Hillary Clinton’s seat, Gillibrand is a known opposer of the current president. She has spoken out ferociously about sexual assault in the military, as well as sexual misconduct by men in power (i.e. Trump). She is also one of the biggest critics to force Senator Al Franken to resign after sexual allegations. The #MeToo movement is one of the most influential campaigns today, so being a supporter doesn’t hurt.
Â
John Delaney- Democrat
John Delaney was the first to announce his bid for the 2020 election. He currently serves in Congress in Maryland’s 6th district. Some of his issues are on economic growth, job stability, mental health care coverage, and lots more.
Â
Richard Ojeda- Democrat
A bit of a controversial candidate, Ojeda became popularly known for his work during the West Virginia Teacher’s Strike. However, he had originally voted for Trump back in 2016. In a majority Republican area, he has an uphill battle trying to convince Trump supporters to put a Democrat in office. He does want to legalize marijuana though so….

Although this is an extensive list, there are a few more people who are rumored to be running for president like Howard graduate Kamala Harris. The election is only a year away, so do your research and make sure to go vote.
