*MAJOR SPOILER ALERT*

So about a week ago, I finally watched the latest Fantastic Beasts movie and at the moment, I am still processing all of my feelings and possible theories about it. As a happy, Hufflepuff, Harry Potter fan, I was pretty pleased with the movie as a whole (despite a couple of plot holes here and there). These are the major points that I’m still thinking about.

Credence is a Dumbledore?!

Let’s start with the elephant in the room. In the last scene of the movie, Grindelwald revealed that Credence is actually Dumbledore’s brother, Aurelius. We already knew from the Harry Potter series that Albus Dumbledore had a brother and a deceased sister. However, there was no indication that he might have had another brother. Throughout the whole movie, viewers were fed the red herring that Credence was part of the l’Estrange family, so to throw this curve ball is pretty huge. I just hope that Credence being a Dumbledore isn’t another lead on, and that his backstory is adequately explained.

Queenie joins Grindelwald?!

Before going in to the movie theater, I watched a lot of prediction videos on YouTube. One that I just couldn’t believe was the SuperCarlinBrothers’ theory that Queenie would join the dark side. But, the movie proved them right, and boy, was I shook. She was such a sweet and lovable character that to see her change to the dark side was so hard to grasp. I do think that the movie did a good job in showing her progression through this loyalty shift though.

Nagini?!

Another spot-on prediction by the SuperCarlinBrothers was that Nagini (Voldemort’s snake) would appear in this movie, and that she would turn out to be a maledictus (a witch/ wizard who is cursed to irreversibly turn into an animal).

However, in the movie, she seems so sweet and nice. What happened to make her become Voldemort’s loyal servant? One theory is that Albus Dumbledore brought her back to Hogwarts, where as a snake, Voldemort would have been the only person who could understand her. Only time can tell though.

Professor McGonagall?!

Professor McGonagall is one of the most beloved characters in the Harry Potter franchise, and she makes a surprise appearance as a young teacher in this movie.

The one issue is that…this movie takes place before she is born. Some fans speculate that this is merely due to the use of a Time Turner (a device that allows someone to travel through time) but that seems a bit like an unnecessary plot line. I’m not sure how this anachrony is going to be explained.

Plotline?

Another time confusion has to do with the overall plot line. The Fantastic Beasts series is planned to be five movies long, spanning from the 1920s to WW2. However, the first two movies are set 6 months apart. There’s going to have to be quite a time jump in order to tell a 20 year story in just 3 more movies. Hopefully this won’t require the use of another time turner.

Dumbledore X Grindelwald

Before the first Fantastic Beast movie, Rowling released that Dumbledore had a romantic relationship with Grindelwald. In the movie, it is revealed that the two of them had made a blood pact with each other, promising not to fight each other.

This brings the question of how their relationship with each other turned so sour, and how Dumbledore is going to destroy the pact, given that he’s the only one who can defeat Grindelwald.

Newt X Tina

Enough said.

With all of these questions and fangirling material, I don’t know how I’m going to wait until the next movie is released.

I'm a sophomore at Harvard University, majoring in psychology with a minor in computer science. Outside of classes, I work with one of the campus's culinary teams, as well as at one of the libraries. I also love dancing with three of the troupes on campus, journaling, and making art. Hopefully, these interests can come together with my degree, and lead me to a job in research and/ or design.
