Fagan’s Flick Review: Enough Said

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Haverford chapter.

In most romantic relationships your perception of your partner tends to be influenced on some level, if only to the slightest degree, by the perceptions that others, often friends and family, have and share with you. But what if the person whose opinion you are encountering is none other than your partner’s ex? Imagine how this would be complicated further by your simultaneous friendship and anonymity with your partners ex. Do you press further to hear all the footnotes attached to your partner, figuring you will save yourself some time in determining whether there is long term potential? Do you immediately change the subject? Do you come clean to your friend that you are seeing their ex?

Though you may never have been forced to answer these questions, Eva, of Enough Said (2013), tackles them all. Eva, a masseuse, is a single mom who has just about given up on love. She currently focusing her energies on trying to enjoy the remaining months she has left with a daughter who will be starting college on another coast all too soon. One night while out at a party with a couple friends, she tells her friend that she finds no one attractive there, and another guest, Albert, agrees with her. Ironically, a few days later, Albert, who is also divorced, asks Eva’s friend for her number. The rest, as they say, is history, right? If only it were that easy. Albert’s ex-wife, Marianne, slips into the picture as Eva’s new client and they quickly become friends. Eva soon finds herself trying to navigate the sticky mess that surely ensues.

Enough Said is a film that is heartwarming, funny, insightful, true to the awkwardness of real life, and so well acted, despite the large coincidence driving the plot. It is currently playing at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute (they offer great student rates!) so be sure to treat yourself to this gem of a film and find out exactly what becomes of Eva and Albert.
