Looking for your very first real job can feel nerve-racking and exhausting. Getting hired or even just making it to a job interview might seem like quite a challenge as the competition between job seekers is as intense as ever. Few employers are willing to hire inexperienced applicants and so you really have to make up for your lack of experience in any way you can. However, whether your very first position involves cleaning, breaking your back while picking strawberries or working in you own field, initial work experience is priceless. We wanted to help out anyone who’s currently out on a job hunt and asked students at the University of Helsinki for some advice.

Katri ja Henni
What was your very first job like?
Katri: I sold strawberries for the summer.
Henni: I worked at a local supermarket as a sales assistant.
Do you have any advice to give for people seeking their first jobs?
Katri: Being active is crucial. Ask around as much as possible and call the employer afterwards to make sure that they remember you.
Henni: I agree that it pays off to show your interest and activity. Instead of merely calling or applying for jobs online, drop by different work places in person. That way the employers are far more likely to remember you.
