Kürtőskalács
Kürtőskalács is the perfect treat for a winter day. It’s basically a whimsically shaped confectionary that moves hypnotically around as it roasts. This goodness is made from sweet dough that is cooked around a baking spit and after, rolled in a generous amount of sugar/ cinnamon/ poppy seeds… It hits the spot each. and. every. time. It’s warm, it’s sweet, it’s wholesome, it smells divine and you absolutely have to try it.
Lecso
Lecso is the perfect brunch food. it’s a sort of stew dish that has tomato, Hungarian peppers and onion in it, but people often add Hungarian sausage and eggs in the dish. I’d eat this morning, noon and night it it were possible – it’s good, it has that signature paprika and it’s just very Hungarian. This is something that is eaten very often in Hungary, and when you try lecso, you can definitely understand why that is!
Rántott Sajt
The fried cheese. Eaten with rice and a hearty serving of mayonnaise, this fried delight won’t leave you hungry. Often, the cheese used is Trappista, and if the portion size is nothing close to the traditional one, you’ll be proud to finish half of what’s on your plate. So greasy. So good.
Palacsinta
Palacsinta is the Hungarian crepe. It’s often oven-baked with quark, chocolate, jam or other sweet fillings. Each country has their own version of the crepe and the Hungarian one – it won’t disappoint.
Lángos
This is the most perfect beach day dish and really, you can’t get more Hungarian than this. This savoury dish is made of fried batter and topped with whatever you like – usual toppings include sour cream, shredded cheese and garlic oil sauce (combine these and you’ll be in Hungarian cuisine heaven), onion, meat and other options. Yum, yum, yum!
