It seems like with nearly everything we do nowadays, we’re getting judged for being “basic”. Society reprimands people for drinking popular drinks, eating popular foods, wearing popular clothing, and watching popular television shows/movies. Basically, anything that is mainstream is considered basic. The current talk is about how fall is considered basic because it seems everyone is obsessed with the same things: pumpkin spice lattes, Halloween movies, crunching leaves, Ugg boots, and football games. We can make fun of these fall aspects all we want, but let’s admit—there are some things we secretly love and consider our guilty pleasures. Here are 5 basic fall activities that we should indulge in with no shame:
1. Disney Channel Original Halloween Movies
Don’t get me wrong—I am a HUGE scary movie fan. Actually, I’m the only one of my friends who will actually see a scary movie in the theater. However, Disney Channel Halloween movies will always be my favorites. “Hocus Pocus” is hands down the best Disney Channel Original Movie of all time (in my opinion). It’s historical, it’s dramatic, it has a cute little love story, and it’s actually scary! The “Halloweentown” movies are also quite amazing and always made me want to get on the bus to go to Halloweentown. “The Little Vampire” is also really cute, and I had a huge crush on Rudolph as a little kid. At HPU, we can use the classrooms after hours and there’s also a screening room in the School of Communications that people tend to rent out to show movies. Students like to grab a group of friends, plug their laptops in, and watch some Halloween movies together with popcorn and blankets.
2. The sound of leaves crunching beneath your feet.
There’s nothing better than walking under the fall foliage with the cool air chilling your cheeks and the wind whipping through your hair, and hearing nothing but the crispy, fall leaves crunching under your boots. People consider this basic, but it’s really one of the most refreshing parts of the fall season
3. Haunted Houses
Haunted houses are the best adrenaline rush for fall and they’re also the best things to do while you’re in college. Pick a Friday night in the month of October and drive to the local haunted house or spooky maze to get a break from the tests and the homework. A lot of High Point students go to the Kersey Valley Spookywoods located in Archdale. I have never been but I’ve been to plenty haunted houses back home. Our school actually shuttles students to Spookywoods, so check with your Campus Activities Team to see what they have planned!
4. Apple or pumpkin picking (or both)
When I was in elementary school, I always looked forward to the fall field trips because they were usually apple picking or pumpkin picking. Now, we don’t have to worry about being chaperoned by our parents. It’s fairly cheap, and you don’t even have to buy apples or pumpkins. Most farms also have a lot of baked goods you can buy and take home to devour (read: apple cider donuts!!!!). They also are the perfect setting for those cute Instagram pictures that you can spend hours editing.
5. Leggings. Period.
Remember like a year ago when the Internet blew up with the “basic white girl”? She wore leggings, Ugg boots, a black Northface, and clutched her white iPhone and Starbucks latte. Sure, it was a funny joke but I will never not wear leggings. Leggings are the most comfortable piece of clothing I’ve put on my body to date. They go with practically anything, they’re skinny enough at the bottom for any type of shoe, and they make your butt look fantastic. People might like to rat on me for wearing my leggings as pants, but I’m most definitely not changing my ways.
