5 Halloween Activities That Are a Great Alternative to Partying

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Does anyone remember how fun Halloween used to be for us as kids? We wore costumes and went trick-or-treating, maybe we went to the pumpkin patch with our families and carved pumpkins together all in the “spooky season.” Many of us do love a good Halloween party, but it’s very hard to not miss these wholesome Halloween activities. Because of that, we have compiled some of our favorite spooky activities for those of us who want to be festive without the partying!

Halloween Parade NYC

On the night of Halloween, there is an annual Halloween Parade in Greenwich Village! You can dress up and join if you’d like, or just watch from the side as thousands of people march playing music or simply in costume. The parade begins this year at 7pm on Spring St. and 6th ave!

Spooky Girls Night

A girls night is our favorite go-to after a long week! Have your girls over to paint or carve pumpkins, or you could even turn on one of your favorite scary movies to really get into the Halloween Spirit! Bonus points if there’s fall-themed snacks like apple cider and pumpkin bread!

Pumpkin Walk

There are some really amazing pumpkin carvers out there, as well as some not so good. Both are just as fun to see at a pumpkin walk near you! Basically people can drop off their carved pumpkins ahead of time and the organizers will arrange them on a trail for visitors to walk through to admire all the jack o’ lanterns! There is one at Old Westbury Gardens this year as well as New York Harbor.

Pumpkin Patch

You just can’t beat roasted corn and apple cider donuts, right? The foliage is beautiful right now out East on Long Island. If you are able, a drive to some of the pumpkin farms out East could be the perfect way to celebrate Fall this weekend. Some of them have corn mazes too if you’re down for the extra splurge!

#HofHalloween

Hofstra is great at many things, and celebrating Halloween just so happens to be one of them. On Wednesday, October 30th there is a Ghost Walk on South Campus at 6:00pm, a Draccula screening at 7:00pm, and a costume party at 8:00pm in Calkins! You do not want to miss these events, not to mention free food at the costume party! See this link for more info: https://www.hofstra.edu/community/culctr/halloween.html

Just because you don’t want to party does not mean you have to skip celebrating Halloween altogether. This is a time to get festive and to have fun away from the academics for a little bit, so embrace the season and don’t be afraid to dress up!
