5 Ice Cream Alternatives for the Lactose Intolerant

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

We all have that one friend who can’t have dairy- or we are that friend. Even for people who aren’t lactose intolerant, sometimes it’s fun to mix things up and try something new.

After all, there are only so many Ben & Jerry’s flavors out there…

Here are some yummy, chilly desserts to eat in place of ice cream!

Ben & Jerry’s: Non-Dairy

Ben and Jerry’s is arguably one of the more popular ice cream brands, especially at Hofstra. But for those who have a dairy sensitivity, the ice cream sometimes isn’t worth the stomach ache.

Good news, though- there are a lot of Ben & Jerry’s flavors that don’t have dairy. Most of them are made with almond milk, but there are other variations on their website.

While the texture is a little different, there are enough chunks built into Ben & Jerry’s flavors that you can’t tell the difference. They’re also coming out with more and more dairy-free flavors, so soon you’ll be able to find more of the best flavors in their alternative form.

So DElicious: Cashew milk

I’ve tried a few So Delicious ice cream alternative flavors, and out of their many options (including coconut milk and almond milk), their cashew milk flavors replicate the texture and taste of normal ice cream the best.

My personal favorite is their chocolate flavors, even though I’m not usually a chocolate fan. It helps disguise the dairy that’s missing!

Talenti Dairy-Free Sorbetto

Although the dairy-free Sorbetto doesn’t have the same texture as ice cream (it’s not trying to be ice cream, which makes sense) it’s still a fun way to mix up the dessert menu.

They also have a variety of flavors, which include raspberry and cold brew. There are even layered containers that come with different chunks, which also helps to break up the texture.

Oatly!

In general, oat milk is one of the more popular milk alternatives, so it makes sense that it has a whole brand of ice cream dedicated to it!

Even more excitingly, Oatly! also makes ice cream popsicles, so if you’re looking for another way to consume your frozen dessert, that’s a perfect opportunity to do so. Of course, there’s also oat milk in a pint, or you can buy the straight-up milk, too.

Vegan ice cream mochi

Anyone who loves mochi will be happy to know that My Mochi has non-dairy ice cream mochi options! One box contains six pieces of mochi in several different flavors, including strawberry and salted caramel.

Mochi isn’t for everyone, though, especially if you’re going to it expecting something more similar to an ice cream sandwich. The texture is chewy on the outside and creamier in the middle- but don’t hesitate to try it. They’re a fun dessert to eat, if not a little out there!

Although it can be scary to buy new desserts when the old classics are just a little further down the freezer aisle, if you love ice cream, it doesn’t hurt to give alternative ice creams a chance. Even though they can be a little more expensive and a bit strange on the palette at first, you might find something you enjoy, and something that isn’t hard on your body!
