5 Ways To Stay Safe While Still Being Social This Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Fall 2021 and the COVID-19 pandemic continues. However, many things are different from when the pandemic first started a year and a half ago. We understand the importance of mask-wearing and social distancing, most people are vaccinated and we have become experts at Zoom University. However, socializing virtually is less than ideal and with less cases across the country and many individuals fully vaccinated, it can be tempting to rip these annoying pieces of fabric from our faces and breathe in the normalcy everyone has been craving. Still, according to the CDC and concerns for the new variants, we are not out of the woods yet. It is vitally important to prioritize safety above all else, but a social life is still very important for our mental and social health. So, here is a list of all the ways you can socialize and still remain safe.

Socialize with those who are vaccinated

If you and all your friends are fully vaccinated, your potential for contracting COVID-19 is considerably lower. This can be a weird conversation to have with people but ask the person you are planning on spending time with if they are vaccinated. If they are, you’re good to go! If not, don’t jeopardize your friendship, just put a mask on or plan an outdoor activity.

Plan an outdoor activity

Studies have shown that people are considerably safer when they socialize outdoors. Take advantage of the weather while it is still warm and do something outside! Go to the beach, take a hike or go for a picnic. These are fun activities that you can do with multiple people and not worry so much about masks and COVID concerns.

Frat parties are still a no-go. As we’ve seen from the first couple weeks back in the semester, there has been an outbreak of COVID cases on campus and parties are no doubt a contributor to that. While big parties can be loads of fun, now is the time to keep your gatherings small. Just invite over your closest friends and party. Sometimes it’s more fun that way anyways!

Stay home

While it can be fun to go out, sometimes it is safer to stay home. Invite some friends over and have a self-care night. Watch a movie, do some face masks and have some drinks. The less you go to public places with a lot of people, the less exposed you will be to COVID-19.

At the end of the day, your safety is your decision. Be choosy with who you decide to socialize with. If you know they are being unsafe and exposing themselves to COVID, then maybe hold off on hanging out with them for a little bit. It’s important to really think about if you want to put yourself in a situation to be exposed. If your friends invite you to an event that makes you uncomfortable, don’t go! Find someone else who will socialize in a way that makes you feel safe!
