Grammy Nominees I’m Rooting For

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

The 59th Annual Grammy Awards take place this Sunday and I cannot wait! Since the nominations were announced in December, we’ve slowly received details about the show. Bruno Mars, Adele, Lady Gaga and Queen Bey are just some of the highly anticipated performances happening tomorrow night.

To help you get ready for the biggest night in music, here are my hopes for who will take home a few of those coveted gold gramophones!

Album of the Year: Beyoncé, Lemonade

This one really needs no explanation, but here it is anyway. Beyoncé is one of the biggest artists of our generation and continues to prove to the world why she is QUEEN. Who else could secretly record an album and film music videos to every song without anyone knowing until the day it’s released? AND she did it twice. Lemonade tackled politics, female empowerment, and shed a little insight on her own marriage. Whether Bey wins or not, this is hands down my pick for 2016’s best album.

Record of the Year: Adele, “Hello”

“Hello” was Adele’s comeback song after a hiatus from her second album. It immediately became one of those songs that you were always humming to yourself (or blasting in the car screaming/singing along). Anytime you turned on the radio after it was released, it was on. “Hello” was classic Adele: soulful, emotional and easy to connect to, whether you’ve been there or not.

Best New Artist: Chance the Rapper

Not only is Chance the Rapper nominated for Best New Artist, but he is also nominated for six other awards, making him the only unsigned newcomer to achieve this feat. I’m personally a huge fan of his hit “No Problem” and would love to see him take home this award. Plus, he loves Beyoncé just as much as the rest of us…#BEYHIVE.

Song of the Year: Beyoncé, “Formation”

“Formation” was such a huge success last year, despite the initial controversy it received upon its release. The song addresses major issues in society such as police brutality and feminism. Although the song did not receive much airplay, it still gained tons of attention thanks in large part to that unforgettable performance at last year’s Super Bowl halftime show.
