Self Care Sundays: When Allergy Medicine Just Doesn’t Cut It

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Okay, some of you may already be looking ahead to summer- daydreaming about what road trips you’re going to take or how much money you’re gonna lose to Aerie by buying several bathing suits. (I speak from personal experience).

On the other hand, some of us are just trying to get through allergy season relatively unscathed. For those that are blessed and do not fall victim to allergy season, I tip my hat to you. It seems like an impossible feat. For those of us that wake up each day with itchy eyes, a scratchy throat, and a stuffed nose, this one is for you. (P.S. even if you don’t suffer from allergies this product is still Self Care Sundays worthy!)

Shower Steamers

Now I know what you’re all thinking. “A shower routine can be pretty extensive and incredibly sacred.” Lucky for you, all you have to do is take it out of the bag and plop it on your shower floor! It’s a simple addition to anyone’s routine.

Some of you may be unaware of what a shower steamer even is. Simply put, it’s like a bath bomb but for your shower! Now you don’t have to draw a bath to have that critical self-care experience of a bath bomb (but if you do, more power to you!) For today’s Self Care Sunday, it’s less about the shower steamer itself and more about the critical ingredients that are in the steamer. They’re really what’s gonna clear out those pesky sinuses. We all know from the times we visited Lush that there’s a wide variety to choose from when it comes to the scent of your product, all different styles and scents to fit the vibe of your hygiene routine. To take matters into your own hands and treat your own allergies and congestion, we need to find a specific list of ingredients and choose our shower steamers based on that.

My favorite ingredients for a shower steamer include baking soda, citric acid, essential oils, almond oil, menthol crystal, alcohol, spearmint leaves and eucalyptus! Some of these you’ve probably seen before. A few of them are very common across all kinds of wellness products. Eucalyptus has been the name of the game in stress relief for a while now, so it’s safe to say it and the other ingredients listed above are essential when it comes to picking the right shower steamer. The one used in today’s article is from a company called BrookieGirl Bath + Body Care. This brings up another great point about the products we use when it comes to self-care. If there is ever an instance where you are able to, shop local or at a small business. Lots of gems like these shower steamers can be discovered by popping into that smaller store that you’ve never heard the name of before. That said, it really doesn’t matter where you get this important product, as long as you get it to aid your allergies ASAP.

If you’ve gone through several different variations of allergy medication, it might be time to take matters into your own hands. Plus, it’s just one step closer to your at-home spa era! When using a shower steamer, place it on the shower floor or anywhere you know the water will hit. This will activate it and carry the steam full of relieving scents up to your face to breathe in.

Everyone should be able to go out and enjoy what spring has to offer, so at the end of the day add these to your shower routine so you can wake up feeling refreshed and congestion-free!
