Top 10 Must Watch Christmas Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Admit it. If you’re like me, you only look forward to Thanksgiving because it means you’re that much closer to Christmas. So now that the fall is over and done with, we can officially get on with our holiday celebrations! Because really, what’s better than cozying up on the couch with popcorn, in a holiday onesie and with some hot chocolate, to watch your favorite holiday film? Nothing. Exactly. So after you’ve carefully curated your Spotify Christmas playlist to trim your tree and hang your stockings, it’s time sink into your favorite spot, snuggle up with a cozy blanket, and settle in for some christmas movie bingeing!

Now that we have tons of streaming options like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime, our holiday movie watching is that much easier. If you’re choosing to forego the ever convenient option that is Freeform’s 25 Days of Christmas, here’s a list (in no particular order) of some must watch movies for your nightly viewing.

“Love Actually”

No list of must-watch movies is complete without this modern classic. A guy longing after his best friend’s new wife, a heartbroken kid over is crush moving back to America, and seven other intertwined stories, what could be better?

“Elf”

It’s been 13 years since it came out and yet, this movie is still a must watch. A man travels to the Big Apple after being raised as an elf, only to find his biological father. “Elf” will make you laugh, cry (from laughing even more), and feel so much better about your sweet tooth!

“The Polar Express”

Bringing the classic book to life, “The Polar Express” is full of all the magic of Christmas. As cheesy as that sounds, this movie is hands down one of my favorites! Just a warning, be prepared to cry!

“The Holiday”

I think it’s safe to say “The Holiday” gave us all false hope of finding love via house-swapping. Nonetheless, it’s got all the schmaltz we love in a holiday movie!

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas”

Thanks to Jim Carrey’s knack for playing character roles, “The Grinch” has definitely become a Christmas staple. If you’ve never seen it, you’re missing out.

“Home Alone”

What starts as a kid’s wish come true, quickly takes a turn. When Kevin McCallister is left home alone, it’s not all ice cream and jumping on the bed. As I’m sure you all know, Kevin ends up battling it out with a couple of burglars.

“A Christmas Story”

This movie gave us a leg lamp, the Red Ryder BB gun, and that incredible pink bunny onesie. If this one doesn’t make it into your marathon, don’t worry, they play it for 24 hours straight on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day every year on TBS.

“National Lampoon’s”

Chevy Chase master comedian. As usual, the Griswold family makes your family’s crazy antics seem normal.

“The Santa Clause”

In this 90’s classic, Tim Allen is forced to step into the role of Santa Claus after he accidentally causes the death of the previous one. Naturally, adjusting to his new job comes with a lot more than a beard, belly and some flying reindeer.

“This Christmas”

Chris Brown before the unfortunate events and Idris Elba (sans English accent). This Christmas is a fun movie to watch with both family and friends!

Honorable Mentions

A Very Murray Christmas

Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer

It’s A Wonderful Life
