Unique and Unheard of Christmas Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Who doesn’t love binge watching Christmas movies to get in the holiday spirit? If you’re an avid Christmas movie watcher, you probably see the same holiday films running on Freeform and the Hallmark channel, non-stop. Although “Elf” and “The Santa Clause” are great holiday classics, sometimes we want a little bit of variety in our movie marathons. If you’re looking for some unique and possibly unheard of films to watch this December, read on!

“The Ultimate Christmas Present”

This iconic Disney Channel Original Movie stars Halle Hirsch and Brenda Song. Two young girls use a weather machine stolen from Santa to cause a blizzard in LA and get out of doing an English paper. (#FinalsWeekRelatable) But the storm causes more problems than they saw coming.

“Last Holiday”

Based on a 1950 film of the same title, this 2006 movie stars Queen Latifah as Georgia Byrd, an introverted saleswoman who has aspirations of a better life. When she finds out she only has weeks to live she withdraws her life savings and goes on an extravagant holiday. She lives like a millionaire and tries to achieve what last dreams she can while she has time.

“Eloise at Christmastime”

Eloise, a particularly precocious and often meddling 6-year-old, lives an extravagant live at the Plaza Hotel. Set in the days leading up to Christmas, Eloise works to stop the daughter of the hotel owner from marrying a crook and reunite the woman with her former boyfriend.

“I’ll Be Home For Christmas”

A college student, played by the adorable Jonathan Taylor Thomas, is having a hard time getting home for Christmas Eve after being pranked by his friends. Through his struggle to get home he learns the true meaning of Christmas.

“Scrooged”

This 1988 retelling of Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol stars Bill Murray as an arrogant television executive preparing an extravagant live production of A Christmas Carol on Christmas Eve. This modern retelling is a holiday classic in my house.

“Eight Crazy Nights”

This is actually a Hanukkah movie. It’s an animated movie featuring an animated version of Adam Sandler who plays a poor young man who must do community service to repay his debt to society. Along the way he learns the meaning of the holiday season.

I'm a senior Theatre Arts Production major at Hofstra University. I'm almost always at rehearsal, reading plays, seeing plays, blogging about plays, or fangirling over plays. My likes include giraffes, Britney Spears, American history and coffee.
