This past week, the Her Campus Hollins team received a box of 200 shampoo and conditioner samples from Garnier (100 samples of each). Garnier believes strongly in the philosophy that everyone has their own beauty and that by taking care, we all have the power to let that shine through. We were sent Garnier’s Volume Extend shampoo and conditioner, which uses natural fibers and extracts to enhance hair’s volume. While we gave out many of the samples to people around campus, we still had plenty left over without a home. So Abby and I, along with the rest of our team, thought about what we could do with the remaining samples.
Finally, it hit me: this is the holiday season; why not use the giving spirit to give back to the community? Hollins has a long history of giving to to the Roanoke community. Every fall, SHARE (Students Helping Achieve Rewarding Experiences) hosts an olympiad to raise money for Roanoke’s Ram House soup kitchen. One semester while I’ve been at Hollins, the choir went and volunteered with children at the Roanoke Rescue Mission. Twice a year, once during orientation and once around Martin Luther King Day, Hollins hosts a Day of Service, where we send students out into the community to clean at Community School, help maintain exhibits at Mill Mountain Zoo, or play with animals at the Roanoke Valley SPCA (just to name a few!). Service is kind of a big thing at Hollins.
After talking about this with the other team members, we decided that we would send any leftover samples to a shelter of some kind in or around Roanoke. The specific shelter has yet to be determined, but the Her Campus Hollins team is excited to be able to start giving back to the Roanoke community. Thank you for the samples Garnier; they’ll all be put to good use!
