Since midday on Friday, Hollins has been bracing for a winter storm that could put a kink in end-of-the-semester plans. The possible damage includes snow and a possible half-inch of ice. Although the storm has yet to fully hit, campus has been buzzing with rumors of what will happen and how people will react.
In order to prepare students for the incoming storm, Patty O’Toole, Dean of Students, has warned the campus community to make sure they have a flashlight and plenty of blankets, in case of a power outage. The biggest risk with a storm like this is ice accumulation on the power lines, which can cause the electricity to go out.
Although many events are on the line because of the weather, more people on campus are concered about White Gift Service than other Sunday activities. This holiday service is a campus tradition, and many different groups on campus play a role in the event. The Hollins choir, World Music Ensemble, praise dance group, and orchestra are all taking part, as well as additional students who will help with reading and lighting candles. The White Gift Service is an annual event, and if it gets called off, there is no guarantee that it will be able to be rescheduled, particularly with final exams approaching.
Luckily, White Gift Service has yet to be cancelled, and many students and staff are eagerly waiting for the final call from the Hollins chaplain, Jenny Call. Hopefully, the storm will not be too bad, and everything will go on as planned.
