#TeamHerCampus
Lately, College Hill has been ablaze with controversy over Her Campus, an international blog with a recently established chapter here at Holy Cross. Â Her Campus is a womenâs blog which features coverage on a number of womenâs issues including as its website states, âStyle, Beauty, Health, Love, Life, Career, LGBTQ+, High School, and Real Worldâ and while it has been trying to find itself in its incredibly early stages, progress was just not quick enough for some readers.
Last weeks âOpinions Sectionâ saw a controversial article about the blog, which I should remind you started earlier this year and has less than forty articles on it, making hefty claims that the blog was âcontinuing to knowingly exclude women of other ethnicities, races, or those who are part of the LBGTQ community,â a claim that was tragically not supported by any sort of evidence.  The author of the article, who oh by the way could totally write for Her Campus or make her own blog if she wanted, went as far to suggest that âHoly Cross would be better off without Her Campus as of late⊠[And] at this point Her Campus needs to make a conscious effort to revamp or disband.â Pretty harsh criticism for a blog that, again, JUST STARTED.  Many questions have been asked about the opinions piece, such as, âWhy not talk to the editors of the site directly rather than lambasting them in public through the school newspaperâ and âIf you have so many good ideas for how to make Her Campus better why not share them with the editors??â and âWhy are you expecting hard hitting social issues to be discussed at length out of the blue on a blog that has a âCampus Cutiesâ section??â and âDoes anyone else see the irony of this girl telling Her Campus to stop giving a voice to women on campus because she doesnât think its giving a voice to enough women on campus??â  So far there are no answers.
The blog accepts and publishes articles from anyone who sends one in. However, it does not appear to publish pictures of their authors, which leads one to wonder how one could figure out that all the authors are white heterosexual females.  Unless you use stereotypes and assume that must be the case because of the nature of the blog⊠hmmm wouldnât that be somethingâŠ
Allegations that this blog, which is oh by the way allowed to exist in any damn way the authors please, would deter potential students from attending Holy Cross after seeing how viciously racist and exlusive our students are, so we here at The Eggplant decided to interview prospective students about Her Campus and boy was the article on point. Â âWhen I read the âAn Open Letter To Cool Beansâ article on Holy Crossâ Her Campus page, I just knew that the school must be one where white women run rampant as fascist dictators putting down anyone in their path,â said one prospective student, âOther articles like âLate Night Food Culture on the Hillâ and âInsta-LAME to Insta-FAME: How To Up Your Insta Gameâ sealed the deal that Holy Cross is a revolting academic institution attempting to push stereotypes on its students because only white women eat late at night and use instagram. Â Never mind the rampant racial and sexual insensitivity that I saw in the article âFive Ways to Cure those Rainy Day Bluesâ that I found to be so hurtful that it in fact gave me rainy day blues.â
Amidst the controversy and at the recommendation of the opinions article Holy Crossâ Her Campus chapter has decided to close up shop. Â âWe hoped to be a forum where Holy Cross girls could write about their experiences on the hill. Â However at the recommendation of several people who have no association with our group we have decided to quit,â said one editor, âRather than continuing to provide an outlet for our writers, whose lives and stories are just as valid as anyone elseâs, we decided weâre just gonna quit. Â It was fun running a fascist regime putting down people who donât see eye to eye with us but now that you guys caught on weâre just gonna have to give up.â This author for one is glad that these horribly mean women are being silenced.
