November is a long month of cold, cloudy, and rainy–although sometimes snowy–days. It is easy to get caught up in long school days and the looming of daylight savings. Fear not, November is a great time to catch up on all of the shows, movies, and books you have been waiting to get your hands on. Here are some of my essential November media:
Movies:
- When Harry Met Sally (1989) — This is the quintessential fall movie. Cozy up with some tea as you watch the interlocked lives of Harry and Sally unfold into a whirlwind romance.
- Pride and Prejudice (2003) — A personal favorite of mine, this movie is based on the beloved novel written by Jane Austen. Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy are nothing short of having a tumultuous relationship as they navigate their respective prejudices about one another.
- Little Women (2019) — Nothing screams November fall like Little Women does. Another take on an adored classic, this movie will not only offer a rich story but will also visually place you in the heart of a New England fall.
- The Harry Potter series (2001-2011) — If you are looking for a nostalgic trip this November, look no further than the Harry Potter series. You can even have a movie marathon and task yourself to watch all eight movies over a long weekend–do not forget your essential fall snacks!Â
- Dead Poets Society (1989) — There is nothing quite like a movie set in academia during the fall. This movie takes the watcher through an unconventional English teacher’s lessons to his students and their journey to understand the idea of carpe diem.
Shows
- Gilmore Girls (2000-2007) — When you think fall it is obligatory to think of Gilmore Girls in the same breath. November is a great time to binge-watch Lorelai and Rory’s amusing antics, Stars Hollow’s quirky features, and the drama of family unfold.Â
- Derry Girls (2018-2022) — A hilarious three-season sitcom based in Northern Ireland during the paramilitary conflict of the 1990s. Yet, despite the undertones of violence, you will find a comical story about friendship and growing up.Â
- Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018-2020) — If you are not ready to leave the spooky aura of Halloween, this show is a great satirical coming-of-age show that centers around witchcraft and devil-worshiping. This show is based on the comic of the same name.Â
- The Twilight Zone (1959-1964) — A cult classic, this show will take you through different fantastical stories that are embedded in morality, ethics, and humanity. Each episode is unique and will leave you on the edge of your seat.Â
- Fleabag (2016-2019) — The only way to truly understand this show is to watch it for yourself. In a few words, this show is about a woman who tries to heal herself but struggles and copes through what can only be described as dark humor.Â
Books
- Six of Crows — A fantasy book that divulges from the Grishaverse–which contains several other stories–and surrounds six main characters. Within this book, you will find a “found family” that is willing to go to the end of the fold for each other.
- A Winter’s Promise — The first book in a series captures the disruption of Ophelia’s peaceful life on her home arc of Anima when an unruly character named Thorn enters her life. This book will prepare you for the looming cold front that follows November.Â
- The Priory of the Orange Tree — Another fantasy-driven book, this stand-alone novel is decorated with themes of faith and love. Lose yourself in the world of dragon-worshipers and dragon-slayers and see how the two worlds collide.Â
- All the Light We Cannot See — This book is set in World War II and intertwines the stories of a blind French girl who is protecting a precious diamond, believed to give the possessor eternal life, and a young orphaned German boy who is pressed into service by the Nazi’s.
