In search of the perfect capsule closet and vintage finds, my wardrobe has shifted from fast
fashion to timeless threads. While perfecting my style, I noticed how many brands offer
second-hand alternatives online, so I wrote an article regarding sustainable fashion in the fall. At
that time, I was only knowledgeable about Lululemon’s and Djerf Avenue’s resale options.
Since my last article, some of my other favorite brands have taken steps in the right direction
regarding environmentally friendly fashion themes. And, let’s be honest, the best feeling is
thrifting a good outfit. One of my favorite brands is J. Crew, a classic time capsule of
American-approved linens and cashmere. As I prepare to enter the corporate world, J. Crew’s
pieces blend professionally approved silhouettes with casual basics. During one of my many
online shopping trips (my toxic trait), I stumbled upon the ‘Resale’ tab at the top of the website.
Curious and excited, I clicked on the tab, revealing recycled J.Crew pieces sold by customers.
To make this sustainable vision a reality, J. Crew partnered with thredUP, one of my long-time
favorite online thrift stores. thredUP sells brands from Coach to Ralph Lauren to Free People
and Urban Outfitters. For those looking to splurge, they even curated a luxury section! Some of
my favorite Youtubers and fashion content creators have inspired me to shop on thredUP,
enticed by their coupon codes and hauls. In an age dominated by social media, it is exciting to
find pieces not easily accessible to everyone via TikTok and storefronts.
My favorite part about companies expanding their sustainable branding is the store credit
compensation and reduced pricing. For someone with unhealthy and often unmanageable
shopping habits, being able to shop my preferred labels discounted leaves me guilt-free. As for
those who are avid shoppers at companies like J.Crew but do not find themselves wearing
certain pieces anymore, reselling provides compensation! For example, those who resell their
J.Crew fabrics and send them to thredUP will receive J.Crew credit based on the selling price of
their items; a win-win! While the compensation depends on the clothing resold, its value, and
the 30-day time frame, it is still a great way to consciously get shoppers to clean their closets.
One of J.Crew’s missions, “We believe in forever fashion. Not fast fashion,” is represented
through its multi-purposeful designs, colors, and fabrics– and now its resale opportunities. To
