Regardless of whether you have a significant other, Valentine’s is one of the sweetest days of the year. Not only is it a great opportunity to consume exorbitant amount of chocolate, it’s also a chance to bond with those you love. As someone who was single for her first sixteen Valentine’s Days, I can assure you that hanging out with friends and watching John Tucker Must Die is just as much fun as going to some fancy dinner! Here are a few special ways you can make the most of one of the loveliest days on the Hill!
1. Try a Secret Valentine’s Day Exchange! If you’re a single (fabulous) lady, I recommend you try a Secret Valentine’s Day exchange with your friends. Four of my friends did this with each other last year while my other friend and I were out with our boyfriends last year, and we were so jealous that we were determined to be included this time around. We buy candy, cards, and cute stuffed animals, then decorate cards for one another. It sounds cheesy on paper, but it makes you feel appreciated and super warm-and-fuzzy in real life.
2. Go Out Somewhere Nice!Whether you’re single or not, booking a nice dinner reservation is a great excuse to dress up and enjoy some fine cuisine off of the Hill. I recommend Via and the Chophouse if you’re in the mood for something fancy, but those are both pricey choices. If you’re looking for something more low-key, you can try the Flying Rhino, Volturno’s, or Sweet for some desert! If none of those appeal to you, take-out pizza is always a solid option—just be sure to give your delivery guy or gal a nice tip!
3. Consider a Singing Telegram!Another college-specific Valentine’s Day option is the Valentine’s Day singing telegram offered by one of our lovely campus acapella groups, The Delilahs! A crusader has to be discerning when ordering one of these telegrams, because while most people would love to be serenaded by such a fun and talented group, some people may feel shy if they are made the center of attention in a public place.
4. Be Nice to Everyone!Last but not least, the most important thing to do on Valentine’s Day is to model the compassion and selflessness demonstrated by Saint Valentine centuries ago. Buy a friend or roommate a carnation, thank your R.A. for all her hard work, or call up your grandma and remind her that you love her. Remember to wish Sis and all of the other staff at Holy Cross a happy Valentine’s Day, and consider asking that cutie next to you in Spanish class if they have their eye on anyone!
