How to Deal If You’re Not Studying Abroad Next Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Holy Cross chapter.

Even though studying abroad is one of the best opportunities offered to Holy Cross students, it is still not a viable choice for many people. I personally will not be studying abroad next year, because I will be spending my spring semester in Washington, D.C., but there are many other reasons why people may not choose to leave for a year! Here’s some advice if you won’t be gallivanting around the world next semester.

1. Network! This is an important one. Find and connect with other people who have chosen not to study abroad. Even if they’re just acquaintances, try to establish connections now that you can develop more during your junior year. Consider trying out the roommate mix and mingle if you haven’t figured out rooming arrangements yet, and try fostering relationships with people in different grades.

2. Plan Out Your ClassesOne advantage of being at Holy Cross for an extra semester or a whole year is that you’ll have a chance to focus on your grades without having to worry too much about missing out, since a lot of your friends will be abroad! Take some time to stop by your advisor’s office and organize your courses for next year. Also, since you’re going to be on campus for longer than many people, you may have time to pick up a minor or a concentration in a discipline you enjoy!

3. Get a Killer InternshipBeing at home means you don’t have to be worried about being away for portions of the summer and that you’ll have plenty of time to apply to internships and take them on if you are accepted! Now is the perfect time to pursue a job or internship in your field of study and build up your resumé!

4. Become a Student LeaderBeing on campus as an upperclassman will mean that you will have plenty of opportunities to become a student leader! Try getting more involved in activities and clubs (which will also help as you meet more people that are still here!), and you will open yourself up to many new experiences. You can pursue leadership positions in clubs that you’re already a part of or you can try out new organizations—whatever piques your interest!

5. Enjoy!Even though attending Holy Cross for your entire junior year is sometimes viewed as an untraditional or unexciting path, there are so many ways to make the most of where you are. Remember to make the most of the opportunities you have, and enjoy every minute at this beautiful school that you’re so lucky to attend!
