The Jo was brand new to Holy Cross last year. It’s a shiny new toy open to all students. Maybe you’ve been or maybe you haven’t, regardless, your workout options are endless. The Jo is a constant go-to, as it is full of standard weightlifting and cardio equipment. However, it also offers many unique amenities and opportunities for wellness. Here’s what you can do to get the most out of the Jo and also make it a space for wellness.
- Take a class! The Jo actually offers in-person workout classes for students, including spin and yoga classes. These classes are a great way to participate in a guided workout amongst peers. These classes allow for everyone to operate at their own pace and comfort level.
- When these classes aren’t in session, the spin and multi-purpose rooms are open for anyone to use. You can connect your phone to the projector in the spin room and take a spin class on Youtube. Or, if you’re a Peloton member, you can workout with your favorite instructors. The multi-purpose room is great for independent mat workouts if that’s more your speed. There are TVs spread out throughout the space where you can also connect your phone, via airplay, to play a HIIT workout, yoga, or meditation video.
- Get a group of friends together and play basketball, pickleball, badminton, or volleyball. The nets and baskets are always set up, all you have to do is ask the front desk for balls or paddles. This is a great way to get a workout in that is both fun and low-stakes.
- When it’s cold or rainy, consider walking or jogging around the track. The Jo’s indoor track is a smart and useful amenity, especially during the cold weather season here on the hill. In the colder months, even walking to class can be unbearable, so it’s great to know that you can go for a run or longer walk without a treadmill and inside where it’s warm! Maybe put on a podcast or mindful breathing video while you walk or run, making your workout even more intentional.
