The smiling face that appears behind the mail counter ever morning is none other than Ms. Madeline Gemme, a former letter carrier for the United States post office and, presently, Holy Cross’s expert for all mail related topics and questions. She has worked at the College of the Holy Cross for twenty years doing everything from sorting and breaking down the mail to helping students, faculty, and staff not only with shipping but also with making the correct decision for what they need done.
She says, “I worked in the elements for so long that I eventually decided I needed a break. This opportunity came up, so I took it!” Her favorite part of her job is the people she is able to help. In fact, she describes herself, “ a people person. I love talking with and offering advice to the students, faculty, and staff. Working and interacting with all of them is really fun.”
Because she enjoys all the people on campus, she especially appreciates the feeling of community present on campus. She says, “The campus is a nice, tight-knit community where everyone is treated like family. The students are absolutely wonderful as are all of my coworkers and colleagues.”
However, many people would be surprised to find out that she is a New York Yankees fan. She says, “Most people would probably never expect that from me, but it is true. I’m from Worcester, but I have been and always will be a lifelong Yankees fan.” Before you make any judgments, make sure to meet her at the post office. Her sport loyalty does not represent who she is as a person.Â
