Now that 1989 (Taylor’s Version, of course) has been re-released we have received brand new, “from the vault” songs that didn’t make the cut for the original album. These five tracks fit perfectly into the setlist and demonstrate Taylor’s incredible range; both vocally and emotionally. Here, I’ll be ranking and giving my thoughts on each of the vault tracks.

5. Say Don’t Go

While I know that many Swifties love this new song, it’s not one of my favorites from the re-release. I really like the message and I absolutely adore the lyrics but the sound of the music doesn’t quite resonate with me. In short, I’d like the song better if it had more of Taylor’s classic vocals in it rather than a new synthesized feel.

4. Suburban Legends

It’s songs like this that remind me that musicians are really just poets in disguise. Taylor bends and shapes her lyrics to form an unhappy, though not completely sad love story. I love a song that captivates the listener with a narrative and Taylor did just that in “Suburban Legends”. Honestly, I would like it even more if it was slightly longer and the storyline more developed.

3. Now That We Don’t Talk

This is the perfect song to get over a breakup, a fallout with friends, or even just to listen to after rough interactions with people in general. Somewhat melancholy, but entirely empowering, this song provides a release of pent-up annoyance, doubts, and intense emotions to reset after a tough relationship.

2. “Slut!”

Although it was nothing like I expected it to sound, this track is one of my favorites on the entire album. Again, Taylor flaunts her amazing writing ability to create mesmerizing lyrics and memorable verses to make a masterpiece of a song. The song is so lyrical and beautiful, yet raw and honest at the same time, coming together to create the type of music Taylor is best known for.

1. Is It Over Now?

Instead of doing a collab with Harry Styles like many fans hoped for, Taylor dropped this hard-hitting, badass banger that spills the truth about her previous relationship with Styles. I love everything about this song, however, my absolute favorite part is the bridge of the song where Taylor sings about whispered sighs and then switches gears to her innermost thoughts of jumping from a great height just to see Styles’ reaction. For me, this song is an 11/10 and one of my all-time favorites. Period.
