Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a dreaded day for singles. Contrary to popular belief, Valentine’s Day used to be a real holiday, dating back to the Roman Empire, celebrating Saint Valentine. In the many years since then, it has become a day glorified by Hallmark with the cards, gifts, gestures, and expectations for those in relationships. Relationships…well, we are all in relationships. We have relationships with friends, family members, roommates, classmates, and ourselves. So although you may not be in a romantic relationship, take Valentine’s Day as a time to express your love to those that you are in relationships with.
- Relationships With Others
As I listed above, maybe these are your friends, your roommates, or your family. Take some time to think about what these people mean to you, what you love about them, and what makes you grateful for them. Then think about how you can express that. Write a handwritten note or card, get them their favorite candy or snack, make a small gesture like cooking them breakfast, getting them a coffee, or running an errand for them. These little things will go a long way and everyone, single or not, is deserving of a little extra love on Valentine’s Day.
- Relationship with Yourself
When we speak of relationships, we are quick to think about the relationships we have with others, but not the relationships we have with ourselves. The relationships we have with ourselves are arguably the most important and the longest relationships we will ever be a part of. Take this Valentine’s Day to put yourself first and show yourself the love you are deserving of. First off, delete social media. Delete it for like a full two days to guarantee that there are no Valentine’s Day Instagram stories left in your feed. Second, make plans with those who love you! Go to dinner or drinks with friends, do a fun activity, a movie night, a wine night. Spend time with those you are in relationships with who boost your mood, make you happy, and show you the love you deserve. Third, make plans with yourself. Do a self-care night. Take an everything shower, paint your nails, do a face mask, order takeout, eat ice cream, watch your favorite movie, there are endless ways to put yourself first.
