Holy Cross provides so many great spring break opportunities to its students, but not all of us can make it on a spring break trip. Also, a lot of Crusaders might find that their friends from home don’t have spring break at the same time as them, which can mean there’s not a lot of chances to hang out with friends throughout the week. Being a Catholic school, we also get the advantage of having some time off for Holy Week. So what should a Crusader do if they are stuck at home? Here are a few great suggestions you can use if you’re worried about being bored during your week off of the Hill!

1.) Volunteer!
Even if you’re not headed to Appalachia to build houses for a week, spring break still provides plenty of great chances to volunteer! Personally, I know of a daycare that services economically disadvantaged children in my area, so I’ll often go there and play with the kids for a day! It would also be nice to shovel an elderly neighbor’s driveway or even just help your little sister with her homework.
2.) Read a Book
Breaks are a great chance to kick back and read something for fun. I usually read The New York Times’ top 100 books list if I’m looking for inspiration. Two of my favorites from this year’s list are All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr and All The Things I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. If you can’t think of something to read, try perusing your local Barnes and Noble! I know looking through their stationary and exploring all the great books they have to offer always cheers me up!
3.) Be #domestic
Both my younger brother and I experiment with making different home-cooked dishes over school break. I especially enjoy cooking while I’m at home because I eat mostly dining hall food when I’m on the Hill. Scan Pinterest for some fun new recipes, go through an old family cookbook, or even try to make something from scratch! Cooking is a fun pastime that will come in handy for literally ever college graduate down the road, so now is the perfect time to try a few new things!
4.) Get Ahead on Your Work
I know, I know, the last thing you want to think about when you head home for a week is doing more work. But spring time is a great chance to get ahead on upcoming papers and exams, especially because you don’t have to worry about classes or extracurricular commitments throughout the week. Lock yourself up in your room or head to the library for a couple of hours–you’ll be glad you did once you head back to the Hill!
