The United States’ Women’s tennis team seems to be on the rise. This was the case for 21-year-old Sofia Kenin. Kenin, born in Russia, moved to the United States with her parents shortly after she was born. While chasing the American dream and her love for the game of tennis, she recently claimed her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.
Defeating two-time Grand Slam Champion and former No.1 Garbine Muguruza, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, Kenin earned her sixth career title. After overcoming a setback in the 1st set, Kenin fought hard and came back in the second set by winning key games on her serve. Moreover, with the help of a multitude of unforced errors in the 2nd and final set of the match, Kenin was able to capture her first Grand Slam title. She is the youngest player to win this title since Maria Sharapova in 2008.
As mentioned above, the young American women had a fantastic Australian Open tournament. Crowd favorite , 15-year-old CoCo Gauff reached the quarterfinals, but eventually was outlasted by Kenin (6-7, 6-2, 6-0), who went on to win it all. Overall, the future seems bright for the next generation of tennis players representing the United States.
