Defeating Final Exams

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Howard chapter.

What is one of the most stressful moments of a college career? FINALS! Studying for days, making sure we know every single bit of material that may potentially be on a test, getting one-on-one help from tutors and various professors, and worst of all, staying up for hours until we memorize all information from front to back. It feels as if the moment finals arrive, so does the hair pulling, pencil tapping, and nail biting frustration.

One way to do poorly on an exam is to stress about it. There are many techniques to stay stress free when studying for an exam and most importantly, taking it.

Get Lots of Rest:

With sleep, you rest your mind and it doesn’t over load. It’s like using your cell phone as it is plugged into the charger. Many cell phones overheat while using it with the charger intact. The phone gets hot, yet people continue to use it. The overheating is bad for the phone, just as overheating can be bad for the mind. You don’t want to get your mind so congested, and get no sleep. That could actually lead to blanking out during the exam.

Eat:

Foods are not only nutritious for the body, but the mind as well. Eat nuts, pasta, fruits, and veggies during exam season. These foods keep you focused and your mind is functioning. Without eating, or eating unhealthy, your focus can start to deteriorate.

Prioritize:

A lot stress comes from procrastination. If students realize that their grades come before other things that aren’t so important, they’ll be successful. Waiting to study and getting started on assignments at the last minute, only puts you in a painful predicament.

Award Yourself:

Studies show that when awarded, people tend to do better in certain activities. If you award yourself, perhaps your studying habits could become better too. Award yourself with some snacks, Facebook time, dancing, or anything that’ll make you feel rewarded. BUT you must be honest with yourself.

All in all, good luck with exams!! Being healthy and knowing your priorities, you should do awesome on your test!
