Denise Sawyer and the Joys of Journalism

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Howard chapter.

Denise Sawyer can very well be known  for her vast involvement in investigative journalism on and off campus. As an ambitious young lady, she is the first on the scene and the first to deliver the facts. You can catch her  toting a tripod, camera bag and reporter notepad in rain or shine.  The self-identified  journalist and student activist weighs in on the life of a budding journalism student.

What would you say makes you so unique?
I brand myself as a digital multimedia investigative journalist. I developed this brand by creating a cross platform approach to investigative stories in a timely matter. I have created a youtube page, facebook page, website, and app to deliver what I have worked so hard to produce. I keep updated with the latest trends.

What campus organizations/clubs are you involved in?
I am leading well over fifty members as the president of the Howard University Association of Black Journalists, which is an award wining student chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists. I am hosting the first radio news show with WHBC and reporting for the Spotlight Network: Campus News show. I am producing weekly entertainment shows, HU Yard Talk and E-Screen on WHUT. I am managing staff reporters for HU News Service during News Specials.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I love to cook, or at least attempt to, in my free time. I enjoy diving into the racks and racks of used clothing, as a vintage shopper. I have a funky style that comes out when you least expect it. I grew up with five brothers, so any reason to get my fingers dirty in outdoor sports is a well enough reason.

If you had to describe yourself in 2 words what would you say and why?
I would describe myself as funny and extra. Just like the news, I’m “extra, extra read all about it!” Just like that quote I’m corny and some might find it funny.

Talk to us more about the fellowship you created?
The Denise Sawyer Fellowship aims to recognize and support work of African American journalists that follows in a tradition of critical, progressive, independent-minded writing. The fellowship is intended to allow a journalist, writer, or photographer to pursue an in–depth project of original research to be published in any medium. It should be groundbreaking and in keeping with the tradition of Denise Sawyers progressive spirit.

You’re a senior. What are your plans after graduation?
I will be working as a digital reporter in the DMV area after graduation.
