On Monday, March 27, there was another mass shooting at a school in Nashville, TN. The shooting occurred at Covenant School, where Audrey Hale brought seven firearms and killed six people. The shooter was 28 and a former student at the school, which helped him map out his plan to target the school. The shooter was killed by the police only minutes after they received the call that there was an active shooter. In a statement, the school stated that “our community is heartbroken.” Many people believe that they will never experience such a gruesome attack, but the lack of gun control makes everyone susceptible to these horrific events.
The Nashville mass shooting has garnered a large amount of sympathy from many including President Joe Biden. He urged Congress to pass more legislation to ensure that mass shootings do not occur. It should not be easily accessible for an individual to acquire an assault weapon. Parents are scared to send their children to school because they are uncertain if they will return home. This is not something that parents should fear when schools should be viewed as a safe haven.
The Assault Weapons Ban of 2023 would ban the sale, transfer and importation of military-style assault weapons, high-capacity magazines and high-capacity ammunition devices. The Age 21 Act would also raise the minimum age to purchase assault weapons from 18 to 21. Senate Bill 25 has been introduced and is cosponsored by many Senators who believe that assault weapons should be regulated to ensure that the right to bear arms has limitations. These limitations are the steps toward gun control and reform that we need to ensure that children make it home safely. How many more shootings need to occur for legislation to be put in place to stop them? President Biden’s urgency for action displays that this is a true problem for America.
