In his sophomore album, Wale shows us just how ambitious he is. Ambition is a theme that Wale has been holding onto for a while after his mixtape staple song/poem “Ambitious Girl” in order to not only show how hard he’s been working.
When it comes to hits and misses, Ambition was definitely a hit. Songs like “Don’t Hold Your Applause” and “No Days Off” have that classic passionate flow that Wale adds to his tracks. Wale has definitely grown from his first album entitled Attention: Deficit, which didn’t do too well.
Along with his newly signed record deal with Maybach Music Group comes bigger and better features than he previously had. Artists like Kid Cudi, Big Sean, Ne-Yo, Rick Ross and others graced the album on several of his songs, adding a different type of flavor that you wouldn’t expect on a Wale song.
Along with his upbeat rhymes, Wale always does something for the ladies. His thoughtful verses and the melodic voice of Miguel on the chorus of “Lotus Flower Bomb” sent women pre-ordering his album right after they heard it. “That Way” featuring Jeremih and Rick Ross is another song that the ladies fell in love with.
Wale always reps his hometown to the fullest whenever he does a project, and Ambition was no exception. He stayed loyal to the DMV area with his ode to DC, “DC or Nothing.” With Wale’s growing success, it doesn’t seem like he’ll forget where he came from anytime soon.
Though the album itself was good, it is kind of disappointing that some of the singles he did before the album release weren’t on the album, like “Tats On My Arm” and DMV favorite “Bait.” Overall the album was good. Though there is some room for improvement, Wale still has time to reach his potential. I give this album a B.
