Halloween scaredy-cat movies everyone can watch

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at HPU chapter.

Halloween can be such an exciting and spooky time of year. While many people tend to enjoy horror movies, I’m proud to admit that I’m a scaredy-cat and don’t enjoy all of the horrors that come along with Halloween. If you enjoy Halloween without scary movies, I’ve compiled a list of non-scary Halloween movies everyone can watch. So grab some candy, popcorn, or whatever treats you like, sit back, relax, and enjoy.

1. Any of the Addams Family movies: The Addams Family, Addams Family Values, Addams Family Reunion.

Who doesn’t love America’s favorite non-mundane family? They’re creepy and they’re kooky. Mysterious and spooky.

2. Nightmare Before Christmas

The much-debated movie- is it a Halloween movie, is it a Christmas movie? You can decide. Throwing my two cents in- it’s a Halloween movie. Jack Skellington leaves his beloved Halloween Town and comes across Christmas Town and decides to seize that holiday for himself. Turning Christmas from its relative normalness to something totally unorthodox.

3. Hocus Pocus

The Sanderson Sisters were hanged during the Salem witch trials and were accidentally revived 300 hundred years later. Follow three kids as they try to prevent them from killing the children in their hometown to remain immortal.

4. The Corpse Bride

Victor finds himself in a predicament when he accidentally marries a corpse bride and has to decide whether to stay with her or return to his human fiance.

5. Twitches

Camryn and Alex are twin sisters that were separated as babies when their world was taken over by the darkness. They reunite on their 21st birthday and discover their hidden powers and try to save their home together. If you enjoy the first movie you might also want to look into the sequel Twitches Too.

6. The Halloweentown series: Halloweentown, Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge, Halloweentown High, and Return to Halloweentown.

Marnie discovers her witch heritage by eavesdropping on a conversation between her mother and grandmother. She decides to follow her grandmother to her home in Halloweentown. Follow Marnie and her siblings on their journey as they defeat the dark force that looms over the citizens of Halloweentown. This is a good Halloween series if you don’t want to stop after the first movie.

7. Coraline

Coraline moves into a new house in a new town and discovers The Other World with her Other Mother and Other Father who appeal to her more than her real parents. Everything isn’t as it seems and Coraline has to find her way to her real home and parents before it’s too late.

8. It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Charlie Brown and Halloween. I rest my case.

9. Ghostbusters

The 80s, ghosts, what more can you ask for.

10. Hotel Transylvania

Dracula runs a hotel for monsters along with his daughter Mavis. When a human named Johnny comes to stay there,  Dracula tries to kick him out and Mavis falls for him.

11. ParaNorman

Norman prefers the company of the ghosts he can see and communicate with rather than regular people. He has to save his hometown when a witch’s curse threatens their safety.

12. Casper

The 1995 live-action version, Christina Ricci- best Casper movie ever.

13. The Haunted Mansion

You might enjoy this movie if you like the famous Disney park ride. Jim Evers wants to sell a mansion on the way to his family vacation. A terrible storm forces the family to stay the night at the mansion. Discovering hidden secrets, the Ever family has to help the ghostly residents to overcome a curse that prevents them from moving on.

Bonus movie: Scooby-Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost

This one is for my fellow die-hard Scooby-Doo fans. The mystery gang meets Velma’s favorite horror writer Ben Ravencroft while they’re solving a museum case. He invites them to his hometown in Oakhaven, Massachusetts where they learn that a witch ancestor of his is haunting the town.

I hope that this list contains some interesting movies for you to enjoy on Halloween.
