What I Learned From Being in NY for a Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at HPU chapter.

I just recently visited New York, and man, am I SHOOK. I had probably the meanest culture shock of my life, and it was the most amazing wake up call ever.

1. Just GO

I learned quickly that many New Yorkers love to just cross the street whenever, wherever. This is so foreign to me because in Hawai’i, if you even think about stepping into a crosswalk when there is a flashing red light, you get a ticket. I adapted quickly and just started copying the locals.

2. Fast paced lifestyle

Everything is so fast paced in New York, especially in comparison to Hawai’i. The hustle and bustle is so real there everyone just is trying to make it to point A to point B. I do not know how much times people bumped into me because I stopped walking in the middle of the sidewalk.

3. THE FOOD

Okay, so the food in New York is unreal. I ate so much homemade hummus and I was living my best life! Also, the Asian fusion food was amazing, tbh it might even be better than Hawai’is Asian food.

4. The clothing

Although it is still technically winter in New York, everyone is just so fashionable! Like MAN, people make warmth look so good. I am literally replicating their styles here in Hawaii, you know, minus the 5 layers of clothing.

New York has honestly captured my heart and make me really want to visit much more of the city. The east coast is something that I was afraid of, due to weather conditions and just the difference in general, but I LOVE IT.
