Album Top 5: Chance the Rapper’s “Coloring Book”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at HWS chapter.

Chance The Rapper has become one of the biggest artists to watch this year. With his most recent album “Coloring Book” being the first streaming-only album to make Billboard’s Top 200, it claimed an impressive #8 spot—and deserves it. His tracks feature everything from killer lyrics and fierce beats, to stunning vocals and beautifully-crafted melodies—making this album one of his best yet. Here are 5 of my favorite tracks from Chance The Rapper’s album, “Coloring Book”:

1. “All Night” (feat. Knox Fortune)

With its catchy rap bars, bumpin’ beats, and fun, carefree lyrics; “All Night” is a guaranteed turn-up anthem. Chance makes us want to dance right away with this     one: the upbeat music and low bass begs you to jam along from beginning to end. His    verses are quick, his tone is easygoing, and he hits every beat—making this song a    true party tune.

2. “No Problem” (feat. Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz)

This gung-ho, beat-driven track is about Chance’s rejection of signing to a label and        keeping his music free for everyone. With verses from 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne, this     song is great to listen to if you want to get hype and ready to take on the world. Opening with the line             “you don’t want zero problems, big fella!” this track will get you   pumped to face any challenges heading your way.

3. “Summer Friends” (feat. Jeremih & Francis and The Lights)

A little bit slower, this track has a more nostalgic vibe about growing up on the South Side of Chicago. Chance hits home with this one, with lyrics like “Our summer don’t get no shine no more.” He writes about growing up in a tough neighborhood and losing childhood friends to the reality of adulthood and the violence of the South Side. Still,      this track keeps you listening with its subtle beats and sharp verses.

4. “All We Got” (feat. Kanye West & Chicago Children’s Choir)

This track is one to listen to if you’re looking for a true feel-good song that never quits! From start to finish, it has great energy that’ll get you dancing and wanting to rap every word yourself. Chance has a ton of energy in this track, making it another awesome party jam. With features from Kanye, singing “music is all we got”, this song is the anthem of the album—and sounds it’s best on a car ride with friends: make sure you turn that bass up!

5. Same Drugs

This has a different vibe from the other tracks on the list. “Same Drugs” is more of a slow jam that reflects nostalgia for childhood in a more thoughtful way. This track is probably the most artistically beautiful song on the album. With references to the innocence of being a kid and allusions to Peter Pan, you’ll want to hold on to your carefree youth after listening to this track. Time to break out your own coloring book!
