Campus Celebrity: Dana Williams ’16

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at HWS chapter.

This ambitious junior is known all around campus and loves HWS more than anyone. Even though you probably already know her, here is everything you need to know about Dana Williams!

Class Year: 2016

Major: Sociology and Public Policy

HC: Why did you choose to come to Hobart and William Smith?

DW: So, I originally I was convinced I would end up at a big school in Boston. My family and I were on a road trip on my way there when we decided to stop and visit HWS along the way. It was the first school I saw and I immediately felt the strong community on campus. Everyone was friendly and I felt like I would have a place here. I was very nervous to leave home for college but I got the sense that people would take care of me here and I would be able to find a mini family.

HC: What are you involved in on campus and what are you most proud of?

DW: I am most proud of being an Orientation Coordinator for the classes of 2018. It was the biggest thing I’ve ever done and it was an incredible opportunity for me to share with the newest classes everything I love about HWS. The overall experience allowed me to meet so many new people and helped me grow. Being an Orientation Leader my sophomore year was how I met all of my friends that I have now and it inspired me to become an Orientation Coordinator!

I also co-lead PLEN, which is Public Leadership Education Network based out of DC that helps women network for careers in policy. I first got involved at the beginning of my sophomore year but I had previously attended a seminar in DC at the end of my first year. PLEN is run through the William Smith Dean’s office and it basically consists of a leadership circle that discusses issues women have in leadership positions. My job is to recruit new students to get involved.

HC: Do you have plans to go abroad?

DW: Yes! I will be studying in Prague next semester.

HC: What are you most excited to do while you are away from campus?

DW: I’m just excited to be there in a big city. I’ve never really traveled before and I feel like I need a change of pace. I’ve become so comfortable at HWS that I think a new environment would be good for me. Also, I’m excited for the food! It’s all about the food.

HC: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

DW: In DC working for women advocacy. Hopefully living a cool life.

HC: What do you want to be remembered for?

DW: I want to be remembered for being kind and someone that people always felt comfortable talking to. Also, someone who always worked hard towards making changes for issues that I cared about.

HC: Is there anything on your bucket list?

DW: I just want to travel everywhere, do and see as much as I can. I feel like I need to experience either skydiving or bungee jumping at some point. Honestly, I have terrible flexibility and I want to be able to touch my toes.

HC: Do you have any hidden talents?

DW: I’m a super good Play-Doh-ian artist. I use Play-Doh as a stress reliever. During Orientation I constantly had a little piece of it in my hand. I even gave it to some First-Years if they ever came to me with a problem or were stressed out. I’m also really good at remembering song lyrics.

HC: What three words would you use to describe yourself?

DW: Friendly, goofy, and independent
