11 Things You Didn’t Know About Beer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Whether it’s that kegger you went to last weekend or the five dollar cup you bought at that party the other night, I’m sure it’s safe to say that beer is definitely the drink of choice for most college students. While some may hate it and some may love it, here are 10 fun, informative, and just plain crazy things you probably don’t know about brewskis!

1.       Highlight your hair.
Have you or a friend ever tried putting lemon juice in your hair then lying in the sun to lighten it? Well, soaking your hair in beer and lying in the sun can do the same thing! (Just don’t forget to take a shower afterwards to avoid completely awkward stares!) Soaking yo
ur hair in beer has also been known to restore your hair’s bounce and body.

2.       Cook with it!
Beer is not just for drinking, you can also cook a lot of things with it! A popular and tasty recipe that uses beer is beer bread. You can also use beer to marinate meat. So research some recipes and give it a try!

3.       Ease a stomachache.
Alright, so this one might sound a little crazy… but it’s true! The carbonation in beer can help ease that stomach pain that’s been bothering you all afternoon.

4.       Remove stains.
Did your roommate accidently knock over her cup of coffee during an all-nighter? Not a problem! Rubbing some light beer on the stain will help the carpet come clean! Be careful though, although not likely, depending on what type of carpet you have… the beer may actually STAIN your carpet. Be sure to test a little bit on a hidden part of carpet first.

5.       Polish your gold jewelry!
Don’t waste your money on expensive jewelry cleaners, just go out and grab a six-pack! Put some beer into a bowl or small dish, and then just drop your rings, necklaces, or whatever jewelry you have into it! Remove the jewelry and dry it with a soft cloth. The beer will put the shine back into your favorite jewelry and make it look good as new!

6.       Keep your outdoor gathering “Bee Free.”
Having an outdoor party before the cold weather hits? Leave a few containers of beer
on the perimeter of your yard. The sugar and aroma of the beer will attract the bees and it will be enough to keep them away from your party!

7.       Drinking beer DOES NOT cause a beer belly.
Well, not exactly. Although beer contains a decent amount of calories, eating and being lazy is what causes a beer belly! Beer plays no role in that.

8.       Make a beer popsicle!
In Germany they serve beer ice cream in popsicle form! However, the Beer Popsicle does contain less alcohol than regular beer. You can try making your own popsicle too. Go to the store and grab a popsicle mold, then put your favorite beer in it and store it in the freezer! No guarantee it’ll be tasty, but hey, it’s something fun to try!

9.       You paid HOW much for that?
The most expensive beer in the world is in Egypt and it’s called Tutankhamen. It costs $52.00 for ONE bottle! Maybe college students shouldn’t feel so bad spending money on alcohol after all!

10.   Take a beer bath.
Next time you want to take a bath, try adding a six pack of dark beer. Soaking in beer can help exfoliate and soften your skin! Once again, just make sure to rinse off afterwards!

11.   So you hate beer, huh?
You’re not alone! A lot of people prefer mixed drinks over beer, but not many party hosts offer hard alcohol because of the price. Many beer companies offer flavored beer such as Leinenkugels. They have flavors such as Berry Weiss (a berry flavored beer, hence the name!), and Summer Shandy (which kind of tastes like lemonade.) So just because you don’t like regular beer doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of other kinds you can try!
