The Redbirds are immersed in practice for their game against Northern Iowa this upcoming Friday, March 8th. Plan to attend the this game? You won’t be disappointed. They had an amazing season so far and it will be exciting to see how they will finish it off! The men’s basketball team’s overall scoring at this time is 17-14 record, 8-10 in their conference and they seem to be continuing strong. They did lose their regular season finale, but they did manage to score the Number 6 seed in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.Â
Senior guard Tyler Brown has made a huge impact as a key athlete on the Redbird Basketball Team. He became the 41st member of ISU’s 1,000 Point Club and made his way to the “Final Four” of the State Farm Dark Horse Competition. This competition started with 16 of the best dunkers across the country and Brown’s skills brought him to a spot in the final four standing in the online voting competition. You can help him win by casting your votes on the competition’s official Facebook page at facebook.com/CollegeSlam. You are able to vote once a day and only the top 3 people with the most votes move on in the competition.
If Tyler Brown wins, he will compete in the 2013 State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-point Championship against the top dunkers in college hoops during the Final Four Weekend. Go vote daily and let’s bring Brown’s votes to the top to get him to Atlanta and on ESPN for the championship on April 4th! The last two winners of this competition are now members of the Harlem Globetrotters so this could be a proud moment for our Redbird nation.
Jackie Carmichael, senior forward, received his 34th-career double-double during the Missouri State “Senior Night” game last Wednesday. Ron deVries is the Redbird career leader with 50, Jeff Wilkins is in second with 42 and Carmichael in third. He is also one of the 25 national finalists for the 2013 Lou Henson Award which is granted to the top mid-major player in college basketball. Way to go Jackie!
In the game against Drake, the Redbirds won with an astounding score of 94 points, 54 of those points scored in the second half. This was the first time since 2001 that ISU scored over 90 points against a Missouri Valley Conference team.
Johnny Hill is a sophomore guard and is the Redbird’s most improved player this season. He has played in 30 games with an average of 7.6 points per game compared to 2 points per game last year. He was also the only Redbird this season to have 10 assists in a game.
The Redbirds started off their conference season with 0-6, but managed to finish .500 becoming the first team in league history to do so.
